Blepharoplasty Q & A

by David Alessi, MD, FACS

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is another word for eyelid surgery, including surgery of the upper and/or lower lids. As we age, our lids tend to sag as the skin loses its natural elasticity. Lifestyle factors such as significant sun exposure and smoking can also have an effect on the appearance and laxity of our lids. Blepharoplasty gently lifts lids and removes excess skin and fatty deposits to make eyes look more alert and less “droopy.”

What is the blepharoplasty procedure like?

Upper lid surgery involves the placement of tiny incisions in the creases of the lid so that excess tissue can be removed. Incision scars are hidden when the eyes are open. Lower lid surgery uses small incisions typically located just beneath the lower lash line to remove excess tissue. Many patients have both lids treated at the same time. Surgery is performed under sedation and can take from one to two hours, depending on whether one or both lids are treated.

What is the recovery process like?

Once surgery is over, compresses and ointment may be used to prevent infection and provide a “jump start” for the healing process. During the first week or two after your procedure, you may notice bruising, swelling and redness as well as minor irritation at the incision sites.

Am I a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

The best candidates for eyelid surgery are those who have noticeable sagging or drooping of the eyelid skin – either the upper or lower lids – and who are in good health, without major illnesses or serious or chronic eye conditions. During your consultation with Dr. Alessi, be sure to provide a complete health history and discuss any eye conditions you may have such as dry eye syndrome or glaucoma.

Can blepharoplasty be performed with other procedures?

Yes, eyelid surgery is frequently performed with other procedures to achieve a more youthful appearance of the entire face or the upper portion of the face. For instance, browlifts are often performed at the same time in many patients to help the eye area appear less tired and worn.
