Face Lift Q & A

by David Alessi, MD, FACS

What areas and issues does a facelift address?

Also called a rhytidectomy, a facelift helps reduce or eliminate wrinkling and sagging in the face, neck and jowls, including the creases and folds around the nose and mouth and the loose skin under the chin. The result is a firmer, less tired, less aged appearance that can have a dramatic effect on the way you look and feel.

What is the facelift procedure like?

Facelifts are performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. After prepping the area and marking the incision sites on your skin, Dr. Alessi will make the incisions needed to access the muscles and deep tissues, gently lifting them and repositioning them while also removing deposits of fat as well as excess skin. The size of the incisions will depend on the extent of your procedure and the results you want to achieve. Once the tissues are reattached in their new, uplifted positions, the incisions are closed and a bandage is applied to aid in healing. In some cases, drainage tubes may be used to help reduce swelling and fluid build-up.

How long does it take to recover from a facelift?

Thanks to today’s advanced procedures, any pain or discomfort following a facelift are relatively minimal for most patients and can be managed with a low-dose prescription or over-the-counter painkillers. Some patients report feeling some feeling of tautness in their lower face and neck for a few days as the tissues adjust. Swelling typically resolves after a few days, and most patients have recovered sufficiently after two weeks to return to work and many other activities, as long as they aren’t too strenuous. Complete healing can take several weeks, and you’ll continue to notice improvements over time as the skin produces new collagen.

Am I too old or too young for a facelift?

Facelifts are typically performed beginning as early as the 40s and into the 80s. During your consultation, Dr. Alessi will discuss all your treatment options that can help you look and feel your best, no matter how old you are.
