Thermage Q & A

by David Alessi, MD, FACS

What is Thermage?

Thermage is a noninvasive radiofrequency (RF) treatment that uses focused energy to tighten and tone the deeper layers of skin without the need for any incisions or the prolonged recovery period that can accompany many invasive procedures. By addressing the deeper layers of skin, Thermage also helps stimulate the development of collagen, one of the building blocks of healthy, youthful skin that can help skin appear firmer and more resilient.

What areas can Thermage treat?

Thermage was developed to treat loose saggy skin and wrinkles on the face as well as hard-to-treat areas around the eyes, lids and brows, such as fine lines, droopy skin and other issues that can make us look tired and worn down. Collagen remodeling helps lax skin around the jowls look tighter and more toned after treatment and for months afterward as collagen remodels itself over time. Thermage can also be used on the body to help tone skin and reduce the appearance of saggy, jiggly tissue.

What is the Thermage procedure like?

One of the advantages of the Thermage technique is that it can be customized to meet each patient’s unique needs. Treatment usually takes less than an hour, and most patients report minimal discomfort – usually no more than a sensation of warmth which can be minimized with cooling sprays administered during treatment. Because the procedure is noninvasive, no anesthesia or sedation is required.

What is the recovery process like after a Thermage treatment?

Recovery is typically quick, with minimal redness that dissipates soon afterward. You can expect to return to your normal activities with no need for extensive follow-up care.

How long do Thermage results last?

Many patients report noticeable improvement immediately, and improvements in your skin’s tone and texture will continue for the next six months or so as new collagen forms a strong support network beneath your skin’s surface. Studies have shown results of Thermage can last for two years or more, thanks to collagen remodeling. To maximize results of Thermage and any cosmetic treatment, use moisturizer and wear sunscreen every day.
